Offsite construction – the updated term for ‘prefabricated’ – seems to be having a real renaissance at the moment, and it’s easy to see why. Known to many in the UK as the housing style that sprang up in volume after the Second World War, ‘prefabs’ were the answer to a need following bombing raids all over the UK that obliterated thousands of houses.

Quick to manufacture offsite, easy to deliver, fast to construct in situ and affordable, this style was viewed initially as a temporary replacement for houses that were destroyed. Yet, many examples are still going strong today. Suffering from a perception of inferior quality – sometimes justified – this style of housing never really caught on as people moved back towards a traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ type construction.

But with a shortage of housing in the UK, coupled with how offsite construction has been met with improved, new design qualities and innovative thinking, prefab is back!

According to a recent Construction News story (read it here), there are still a few wrinkles to iron out to make this method a go-to alternative to tradition, but it will surely take an innovate approach to find solutions to problems that we now face. As Einstein stated: ‘We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.’

Naturally, there is a distinct crossover between innovators in the UK housing market and the products that we manufacture here at Monolith. Founded on the principles of cost-saving, time reduction and innovation within a traditional marketplace, our class-leading products such as BrickPlus: Pro and StonePlus continue to exceed the needs of our customers, including those in the offsite construction market.

As our products are easy to install and provide the same look and finish as traditional options, offsite manufacturers are interested in how we can add value to their business. This varies on a per project basis, but overall, we supply an enhanced product, shipped on pallets that are lighter than traditional brick (and contain more product!) for a finish that is equal – if not better – than traditional products. Offsite manufacturers enjoy the fact that these cost saving benefits help their bottom line.
